Jewelry & Fiber
I grew up surrounded by rock hounds and jewelry makers so I come to this fairly naturally. Granted what I do and how I do it is miles away from what my grandparents did, but they certainly planted the seeds in me that drew me into the career I have.
My favorite things to make jewelry with are beach rocks, especially fossils and agates, and pearls. I became a silversmith as a way to facilitate my visions of wearing my treasured finds. Who knew that sitting on a fabulous rock-strewn beach many moons ago and thinking 'surely there’s a way to earn a living from these beautiful stones’ would lead me here? I guess I did on some level, anyway, I made it so. I lead a charmed life.
After years of jewelry making, I found myself trading jewelry for 3 alpaca. This led me down a long twisty fibery road. I have experimented with and love: weaving, dyeing, felting and spinning. Some of these offer a better income stream than others so you’re more likely to see these for sale, but in general, I am indeed a fiber girl.
So far the nonpaying creative parts of myself include photography, writing, mix media and many things yet to come. It is a good life I have created and I enjoy leading it.
