Vivian Chesterley

Oils

Vivian Chesterley paints abstracted impressions of the Salish Sea, where she grew up surrounded by shifting tides, fog, and radiant light. Her work explores how light interacts with water—absorbed, reflected, and transformed. Vivian begins each painting intuitively, layering color and texture until the light reveals itself. Her process includes splatters, drips, palette knife strokes, and transparent washes, all used to evoke the movement and mood of coastal landscapes. Without photographic references, her paintings emerge from memory and emotion, inviting viewers to experience the sea through her eyes. Her compositions are meditative, expressive, and deeply rooted in place.
